The British and Colonial Aircraft Company was formed by Sir George White in 1910. This means that people in Filton have the opportunity to have a big centenary celebration in 2010. This is not just a celebration for the industry itself.
Because we are living in the town where the Britannia and Concorde were developed, where our people worked in the biggest wartime aircraft factory in the world, where even now residents are working on cutting-edge technology in aviation, Filton itself has something to celebrate.
We would like all organisations in Filton to think about how, collectively, we could make this centenary something really worthwhile. Filton People already have some ideas, and we would like interested people and organisations to come together and work out a plan.
No, it is not too early. If we are to write a play, commission a piece of music, get celebration memorabilia made, or write a book – as well as getting in funding for all this – we can’t start too soon.
